Cemetery Project GPR Poster Presentation at the Northeast GSA

On March 23, 2016 Cecil Cooper, Lee Stocks and I attended the Northeast Regional Meeting of The Geologic Society of America (GSA) in Albany, NY to present a poster on the use of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) in conducting clandestine grave surveys. While we were in our poster session we had an opportunity to talk to many different people, not only other students and faculty of other Institutions, but industry professionals as well. The poster we presented is shown here.

One person we talked with is attending school in Ithica, however his family is from Tioga County, Pennsylvania and he was very interested in the project. He is studying how to repair monuments or other stone features and was quite interested in building a working relationship with our project to assist in the repair of damaged grave markers. He has an extensive knowledge of the geochemistry of the rocks and what the best materials are to repair damaged or broken ones.

Along with the poster presentation I took along my tablet and was able to demonstrate our project and its mapping potential through an online, interactive web map of the Cleveland Cemetery.

There was some interest in the project and we were all able to discuss the project with various people over our time in the poster session. Attending the GSA Meeting was also a great experience for us, as it allowed us to network and make connections with other students and professionals alike within the Geology and Geo science Community.
